American Carpet Masters integrates standards and guidelines from the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA), and the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). NADCA standards direct that “the most effective way to clean air ducts and ventilation systems is to employ Source Removal” equipment and technology. Source Removal procedures require the system be placed under negative pressure while various instruments are introduced to dislodge debris and contaminants. These particulates and microbial contaminants are then trapped by the collection device utilizing a HEPA filtration system and removed. Each vent opening is cleaned separately. The method varies by type of ducting and layout. Hydro- remediation is utilized whenever possible to clean evaporator coils, blower components and drain pans.

The NADCA directs consumers to “beware of  ‘blow and go’ air duct cleaning companies. These companies often charge a nominal fee (misleading low price) and do a poor job of cleaning the heating and cooling system. These companies may also persuade the consumer into unneeded services with and/or without their permission.”

Normal charges for duct cleaning (according to the EPA) will vary, ” depending on the services offered, the size of the system to be cleaned, system accessibility, climactic region, and level of contamination.” An additional factor is the duct material itself and type of construction.

Keeping Your Air Ducts Clean

Now that your ducts are clean

You should notice a difference in about three days. Just remember that the average family of four tracks in roughly 2 1/2 pounds of dirt a week. In order for you to manage the problem, here are some helpful hints.

  1. Have your Air Duct System cleaned every 5-7 years.
  2. You should invest in a good furnace type air-cleaner. If you have one, clean it every 30 days.
  3. Keep the cold air returns dusted off.
  4. Take off all register covers and wash when noticeably dirty. Also vacuum down the ducts with your vacuum at least once per year.
  5. If you have a cold air return near a fireplace, cover it when burning a fire.
  6. Never run your furnace fan with your windows open.
  7. Have your furnace and air conditioner cleaned and checked at a minimum of every two years. Make sure fan and fan cage area is cleaned.
  8. If you have a humidifier, change the filter as specified.
  9. When purchasing a vacuum cleaner, along with cost and vacuum power also consider filtration of escaping dust.
  10. Cement floors give off dust; therefore they should either be painted or sealed to prevent excess dust from entering the furnace system.
  11. If the furnace is located in the same room as the washer and dryer, a door should be left open while the dryer is running, so that lint does not accumulate inside burners.
  12. Flexible dryer vents should be removed and replaced with straight piping.
  13. Do not store boxes on or around your furnace.
  14. Carpets act like a filter and trap debris. That is why you should have your carpets cleaned on a regular basis.
